File Uploads
What file types are supported?
FileUploadGPT supports a wide range of text-based file formats:
- Documents: PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD (Markdown), HTML
- Data: CSV, JSON
- Code: JS, PY, Java, C++, and other programming languages
Note: Image files and scanned PDFs (image-based) may not work as expected since they contain no extractable text.
Is there a maximum file size?
There's no hard limit on file size with FileUploadGPT. We've successfully tested with files over 50MB. However, very large files may take longer to process depending on your computer's performance and internet connection.
Can I upload multiple files at once?
Currently, FileUploadGPT supports uploading one file at a time. If you need to upload multiple files, you can upload them sequentially in the same ChatGPT conversation. Each file's content will be added to the conversation context.
How long does uploading take?
Upload time depends on your file size and computer performance. Most files (under 10MB) upload in just a few seconds. Larger files (50MB+) may take 30 seconds to a minute. A progress indicator shows you the upload status.
What happens if my upload fails?
If an upload fails, you'll see an error message explaining the issue. Common solutions:
- Refresh the ChatGPT page and try again
- Check that your file is a supported format
- Ensure you're logged into ChatGPT
- Try a smaller file to test if it's a file-specific issue
If problems persist, contact us for support.
Privacy & Security
Is my data safe with FileUploadGPT?
Absolutely. FileUploadGPT processes your files locally in your browser. We never upload, store, or access your file contents on any external server. Your data stays on your device until you choose to send it to ChatGPT.
Does FileUploadGPT store my files?
No. FileUploadGPT never stores your files. All processing happens locally in your browser, and file contents are only sent directly to ChatGPT. Once you close the tab or navigate away, no trace of your file remains in the extension.
Does FileUploadGPT have access to my ChatGPT account?
FileUploadGPT can interact with the ChatGPT interface to paste your file content, but it does not have access to your OpenAI account credentials, API keys, or account settings. It only operates within the ChatGPT webpage you're viewing.
Can I use FileUploadGPT with sensitive documents?
While FileUploadGPT itself never stores or transmits your data to our servers, remember that any content you send to ChatGPT is subject to OpenAI's data policies. If you're working with highly sensitive documents, review OpenAI's privacy policy first.
What permissions does the extension require?
FileUploadGPT requests minimal permissions:
- activeTab: To interact with the current ChatGPT tab
- scripting: To paste content into ChatGPT's input
- storage: To save your preferences (like chunk size settings)
We only request permissions that are absolutely necessary for the extension to function.
Troubleshooting
The extension isn't working — what should I do?
Try these troubleshooting steps:
- Refresh the ChatGPT page
- Make sure you're on chat.openai.com (not another OpenAI page)
- Check that the extension is enabled in chrome://extensions
- Try disabling other ChatGPT extensions temporarily
- Clear your browser cache and try again
If none of these work, please contact support.
I'm getting an error when uploading — how do I fix it?
Common error causes and solutions:
- "File type not supported" — Try a different format (PDF, DOCX, TXT work best)
- "Could not find input" — Refresh ChatGPT; the page may have updated
- "Upload failed" — Check your internet connection and try again
The icon disappeared from ChatGPT — how do I get it back?
The extension icon appears in your browser's toolbar, not within ChatGPT itself. Click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome and pin FileUploadGPT to keep it visible. Then click the icon while you're on a ChatGPT page to use it.
Is FileUploadGPT compatible with other ChatGPT extensions?
FileUploadGPT is designed to work alongside other extensions, but conflicts can occasionally occur. If you experience issues, try disabling other ChatGPT-related extensions temporarily to identify any conflicts.

Comparison
How is FileUploadGPT different from other ChatGPT tools?
FileUploadGPT focuses on doing one thing well: uploading large files. Unlike multi-purpose ChatGPT extensions, we're laser-focused on solving the file size limit problem. Key differences:
- Free forever — No premium tier or subscriptions
- Privacy-first — All processing happens locally
- Simple interface — One click to upload
- No account needed — Install and use immediately
Why should I use FileUploadGPT instead of splitting files manually?
Manually splitting files is tedious and error-prone. FileUploadGPT automates this process intelligently:
- Saves hours of copy-paste work
- Maintains context across chunks
- Handles formatting automatically
- Works with any supported file type
What would take 30 minutes manually takes seconds with FileUploadGPT.
